Firefox Quantum Sprint!

I organized a Firefox Quantum Sprint on the 7th of October at Cummins college Of engineering, Pune. Due to a clash with many more events taking place in the college, the expected number of students/attendees fell down drastically. But, still not losing hopes I conducted the session like it was planned. In fact, less number of attendees led to proper and personal attention.

Event Flow: 1.Introduction talk 2.Participants install Nightly for Desktop 3.Once you have finished testing a website, report it and other steps. Reasons to Attend: 1.Get your hands dirty in checking the unreleased version of the new upcoming Firefox57version, before the update is released officially. 2. Help us make it better, by reporting the issues you face as a consumer. 3. Build a Network.

Mozilla L10n meetup 2017:Pune

This meetup was nothing less than an awesome kick start to the year 2017, after the annual meetup of Pune!

To define l10n for me is as simple as Love+Passion for translation and language, altogether.

img_20170122_180053Day 1: The day commenced a lovely introduction to so many new faces  like (Marathi localizers) Narendra, Nilima plus (Hindi Localizers) Megha, Dhiraj, Mahtab and other experienced localizers. It was so pleasant to see all others gather once again under the same roof , collaborate and work towards one common goal on the first day. We targeted all the untranslated/ not localised strings in our respective languages. In the process, we learnt about how to come up with error free strings, how to follow the style guide and not to simply try and fit in the words in the string puzzle, even if they don’t belong there! Trust me, it was a fun learning experience and nevertheless, quite productive too.

The day ended with, Chandrakant ji ‘s motivational words on how and why to contribute to this field. Not to forget, he also emphasized on each one’s individual goals and reasons to stick to L10n.

Day 2:

I rediscovered various facets and fronts of what does our contribution goes through.Yes, Faizal ji elaborated really well on : the 4 channels ‘our’ localised strings are poured into and the further process. the best part was to test the nightly version of the Firefox developer edition in Hindi. I must say, my head got heated up as quickly like the bowl of Ramen , to see the quality of our localised strings. We came up to a conclusion that, we are to increase the quality to a level that at least doesn’t hurt OUR eyes, haha, yes!

We also came up with various ideas or more specifically ‘Desi’ ideas on how to spread awareness and increase the usage of the available localised browsers that Mozilla presents to the crowd so as to break the myth and thus shout it out loud to the world that Internet is open and is way beyond JUST English, for all“.

Then came the moment of giving away hear- hears to the consistent localisers like Ravi Kumbhkar , Dhiraj Kumar Singh and Aniket Deshpande for their amazing contributions.

Shall not deny to thank Faizal Aziz ji, for the surprise GIT learning!

Now added as a new localizer here :L10n Hindi-IN wiki page  yay! and I finally received my L10n souveneir- The L10n tee.

Finally, i returned back home, taking a bag full of learning, experiences, tips, QA techniques and much affection for the l10n community  and Mozilla as a whole!

Mozathon hyderabad- the online way!

It started off, with myself designing a beautiful and eye-catching poster to get as many Mozillians and Non- Mozillians on board. And yes, I was not take by surprise, when the number of attendees approximately matched the expected Number.

I had a great time, delivering an online session (Couldn’t make it up to the location) on Open design, L10n and its importance.

Open Design:

Purpose: the main aim was to increase contribution(from the people of this background) or at least ideas (from technical guys), to preach about the open design arena and its importance. I was successful at unleashing the creativity of all the participants and attendees including the Organizers viz. Dyvik Chenna and Deepak Upendra.

Localisation l10n:

My previously recorded video  available on You Tube was played in order to create awareness on how and why to localize. How does it help an individual on a personal and of course a professional level was explained. During my online session, I also tried to clear their doubts if any. Although, the whole concept was explained simultaneously by Dyvik Chenna while the video was streaming.

Altogether, it was an awesome experience delivering the entire session online and we received great feedbacks.

Role of l10n on the marketing & social fronts at FUEL Gilt Conference 2016.

I had a great opportunity to represent Mozilla and ofcourse present my marketing tips focussing the field of Localization in the esteemed FUEL Gilt conference 2016. Unfortunately, I had to present online due to unavoidable situations.

Hereby is the link to my presentation:http://www.slideshare.net/AasthaVijay/fuel-gilt-2016-role-of-l10n-on-marketing-and-social-fronts

plus, I’ve also made sure that I share the resources I’ve acquired and collected through YouTube at this link:My youtube videomy youtube video.png

On the concluding lines, I really enjoyed the process, learnt a lot, and I again thank each one in the selection committee for giving me this chance to share my knowledge and contribution and not to forget Love for Mozilla!

Software Freedom Day: Open source marketing and branding.

Yet again an awesome opportunity to represent Mozilla at the SFD Mumbai event, Goregaon on the 17th of September’16. I enjoyed awesome company of Chandan, Rishu  and Chirag and awesome support of Parvesh shah who organised this event thus promoting a great cause!

My ppt on open source branding and marketing

To my surprise, we witnessed the highest number of responses and audience presence for my session. Post this event we got many Mozillians from Mumbai. We have maintained a telegram group for the same.

The MInM 2016: Operations and Infrastructure team

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A special blog post for this special experience and the process that we i.e. Me and Dyvik Chenna took forward and are continuing successfully with our operations and infrastructure team which was formed during the Meetup.

Even though it was just, us two (previously mentioned)  initially we are now a total number of 7 and growing.

oper and infra.png

We also have prepared a pdf of what and how this functional team shall work.

operations-and-infra here’s the document link.

We also held a hangout and also maintain an etherpad wherein we discussed many topics and areas how other functional teams can be of great help to us.

Mozilla India Meetup 2k16: An experience & a token of thanks.

To start off with, if you’re here to know about what happened at the event, then please look for the documented stuff (which even I’ve contributed into). Here, I’m writing down, what’s not mentioned in those documented forms.  I take time, to congratulate Mozilla India community to have been successful in accomplishing the goals of restructuring the whole process & of course (my favourite part), inclusion of new functional areas, thus increasing the scope of overall contribution towards Mozilla.

These 3 days (26th to 28th) have been added to the most overwhelming experiences of my diary, within. I witnessed a lot of Diversity, which is indeed an integral part of our Mozilla Community and we must strive hard to maintain (As per our lovely Konstantina Papadea) & to even pump it up to the next level.

The presentation and clarity of thought exhibited by Bradley Cohen, makes me admire him every time I think of Marketing, branding or moreover anything related to Moz Logo, oops! (No more Moz, fox, or zilla ) the Mozilla Logo. Coming up to the personal leadership session by Ankit Gadgil, co-facilitated by Natasha Chaudhary , led to interaction with mozillians plus leaders, each representing one or the other geographic location on the Indian map. This event was nothing less than a Self-Check , and quite an alarming one to where I as a Leader stand (It wasn’t that bad for sure).

IMG_0333Exchange of thoughts, voicing up your views, and staying up for like almost 12 hours of a day together for just the unanimous MOZ Love, defines a true community. Throwing some light on my focussed learnings:

  • Appreciate others.
  • Listening helps.
  • Decentralize power and responsibility (yes because, with great power also comes great responsibility, remember?).
  • Don’t always jump on solutions, rather analyse on the problems. It increases the efficiency of the solution (trust me, it does).

On the concluding notes, I’d express my gratitude towards:

The whole Event planning team, logistics team of Moz Pune for organising a PAN India meetup, at the same time also made each and every attendee, at ease and comfort. Hats off to the efficient planning, towards George, Bradley, Dϊetrϊch, and the really sweet Konstantina for taking time and coming down to India and sharing their acquired valuable skills, experiences and knowledge. Trying to remember some names, like Ram Dayal to never say a no to any question related to MozVR, Vnisha, for being such a wonderful host, Priyanka and Diwanshi to always bring us back to the venue on time, thus making the event start and end on time. Umesh ji for keep the string intact such that these vital and precious beads (event and minute details) don’t slip off, Dyvik for being such a wonderful partner in the Operations and Infrastructure team (the smallest team).

A special Thanks to Tripad and Jafar for very well airing the event and his tremendous efforts, and the very patient Bhuvnesh, to deliver such great quality photographs and memories of this event and Harsha Vardhan for starting this new segment of Documentation, thus opening up doors for me to contribute towards this well managed event. Lastly, to all the great mozillians I befriended, whom i assure that they’d be more than just a contact in the phone. Cheers!

Represented Mozilla at The Mini Debian Conference Pune’16.

Me and Dyvik together pitched for Mozilla and ofcourse Open source as a whole at the mini debconf 2016 held at COEP, Pune on 30th July. It was great batting on the open source grounds from team Mozilla!

We shared plethora of open source resources, knowledge, educating people about open source and the need of marketing and branding on the open source fronts. It was indeed great pleasure to interact with the brainy students from and outside Coep along with the diverse speaker Dyvik Chenna

Mozilla Pune L10n hackathon

It was great to be a part of this L10n translation sprint held on 19th of March 2016 at the CDAC.
The sprint started with Chandrakant ji explaining us role of localisation and its requirement through examples of anna (rupee in rural times) , devnagiri script & its importance in rural market. We were also guided by Rajesh Ranjan ji, who had joined us all the way from Delhi. He told us about the style guide he published for the Hindi Language which could be definitely helpful in the localization of strings for Mozilla.

Umesh then strategised by listing down the number of strings to be localised and the strings we localised at the end of the day! I participated in the Hindi localisation as its my mother tongue and really enjoyed it. Post event i have been doing a lot of Localisation.

#Womoz Marathon(Webmaker, stumbler and much more)

We ( the members of Cummins Firefox Club) had checked everything twice or thrice just to make sure nothing goes wrong at the last moment! And a big thank you to them, because without their support it wouldn’t have been possible for us to throw up such a successful event!

Guest Speakers were: Prathamesh chavan, Siddhartha rao, Aman sehgal and Diwanshi Pandey.

The first talk was by Diwanshi, she explained the women about Womoz, it’s introduction, the goal, the common myths, the problems faced by women and their solutions. Then we had Prathamesh telling people about the Mozilla Geolocation Service and the app Mozilla Stumbler and

how it is just possible to contribute to Mozilla in a fun way.

Then Aman told them about the new  Webmaker app and how it works, how to create makes on the app, how to share them, etc . He gave them a proper demo of the complete thing and then they asked doubts.

Siddhartha! he explained everyone how to make apps on the Firefox browser and we held a competition just after we were done teaching. I myself participated in the webmaker competition and it was complete fun!

At the end of the day, we got mozilla bands and badges, which are worth having.
